What are the Standards for Mathematical Practice?

  1. Ok I'll kick us off w/a topic I wanted to chat about last week, but we ran out of time: the standards for mathematical practice #CCSSMparents
  2. You might be thinking "the whats of whatsa what now"? #CCSSMparents
  3. One of the big differences between the CCSSM & past standards are these standards for mathematical practice. #CCSSMparents
  4. These standards for mathematical practice (SMPs) describe how the mathematical experience should look and feel for students. #CCSSMparents
  5. So rather than being based on specific math content, these SMPs are based on good mathematical habits at any grade level. #CCSSMparents
  6. I like to think about the SMPs as describing good math practice for ANYONE! Whether a scientist, an engineer, or a 1st grader. #CCSSMparents
  7. I'll give you an example: Practice Standard 1 states: "Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them." #CCSSMparents
  8. No matter what the math problem is, whether it's counting the number of squares, or finding a derivative, a student needs to+ #CCSSMparents
  9. first make sense of what the mathematical NEED of the problem is, &grapple with how to apply mathematics to solve that problem.#CCSSMparents
  10. Part of the underlying challenge of the SMPs is that students need to be familiar w/the way math works so that they can+ #CCSSMparents
  11. The SMPs aren't a new idea--the NCTM standards had something similar in a reasoning and logic strand. However, the CCSSM+ #CCSSMparents
  12. pushed the envelope by calling these STANDARDS, and making them over-arching and pervasive throughout the content. #CCSSMparents
  13. Also? If you read the CCSSM, they're the first set of standards you encounter. Front and center. #CCSSMparents
  14. These SMPs have really been seen as THE aspect of the CCSSM that sets it apart. In fact, the National Council of Supervisors+ #CCSSMparents
  15. of Mathematics recommended to states and districts to FIRST try to align with the SMPs, and then the rest of the + #CCSSMparents
  16. My favorite illustration of what makes the SMPs different from "old math" is to think about the difference between the way+ #CCSSMparents
  17. my mom &my nanna cook. My nanna is a classic 1940s/50s housewife w/ her well-written recipes.She has a recipe for everything+ #CCSSMparents
  18. and her recipes are her BIBLE. My mother never follows a recipe. She cooks by feel and taste. #CCSSMparents
