- .@herdofhills That is going to depend on your district or state. (It's not decided by the CCSSM). #CCSSMforparents I believe iReady tests +
- .@herdofhills are used to help assess students, to see where they are at. In ed, we call this "formative assessment." #CCSSMforparents
- .@herdofhills It is meant to help teachers know how to tailor their teaching. It's different from "summative assessment"+ #CCSSMforparents
- .@herdofhills which is at the end of the learning (ie an end of year high stakes test). #CCSSMforparents
- .@herdofhills But this brings up the question of TESTS (yikes!), so let's go there and chat about tests for a minute :) #CCSSMforparents
- There are two consortia that are developing assessments for the Common Core (both math and ELA). They are PARCC & SBAC. #CCSSMforparents
- These two consortia are funded through Race to the Top to develop new, high-quality assessments for the CCSSM. #CCSSMforparents
- Both consortia have out sample items &it's worth looking up which your state belongs to, checking out their website. #CCSSMforparents
- SBAC (or Smarter Balance--not the fake butter, though) is here. smarterbalanced.org/ #CCSSMforparents
- There's also a TON of politics wrapped up in the assessments. Teacher Eval, private for-profit corps trying to make $, etc. #CCSSMforparents
- For me, as someone who works in math ed, the assessments are the real scary part of the CommonCore. There are a few reasons #CCSSMforparents
- 1. The CCSSM in math was written to be VERY faithful to math as a subject. As a result, there are certain components that+ #CCSSMforparents
- are hard to assess. For example, one of the things the CCSSM says students should be doing is "persisting in + #CCSSMforparents
- problem-solving." In other words, they should maybe make a mistake, and try again. This is VERY hard to assess on a test. #CCSSMforparents
- BUT! Persistent problem-solving is ESSENTIAL to being a good mathematician! So do we teach math poorly to make test-making #CCSSMforparents
- easy? This is the challenge of assessment. Learning is VERY, EXTREMELY hard to quantify. #CCSSMforparents
- Another reason I'm nervous about the assessments: they have the capacity to cause us to throw the baby out w/the bathwater. #CCSSMforparents
- The CCSSM assessments come out next year. I can tell you right now that TONS of kids will fail. #CCSSMforparents
